Papua New Guinea 2008

Mossy stream, habitat of AllococalodesIn 2008, Steve Richards of Conservation International invited Wayne to participate in one of the their Rapid Assessment Program expeditions, and what an expedition it was. New Guinea had long been high on Wayne’s bucket list of places to collect because of the strange cocalodines, Diolenius, Coccorchestes, and others. Not only were numerous new species (including new genera) of cocalodines found [pdf], but the fresh specimens of other salticids allowed Junxia Zhang to discover that Diolenius and indeed most of the New Guinea fauna were euophryines [pdf], a surprise to us.
